Sorry to disappoint from the start, but no I did not try Kobe beef (seeing as I don’t eat beef..). I’m doing a quick tour of a few cities today and Kobe was my first stop. Lesson 1: get the train timetable and book tickets in advance. I went to hop on a train and it ended up being sold out.. nice start but no worries I just waited for the next one. It’s a little over an hour to Shin-Kobe Station from Hiroshima. It’s really easy with the rail pass. Behind the station there’s a hiking trail and also a ropeway. I recommend doing what I did and taking the ropeway to the top and walking down. The ropeway takes you to the top of the Nunobiki Herb Garden, then you can hike down and see Nunobiki falls.
The herb garden has a nice restaurant with a view overlooking the city. Bonus: The food is also quite good. Definitely recommend it.
Once finished with a great meal, I started walking down through the gardens. There are some stopping points which are nice but personally I’m not incredibly interesting in studying herbs all day.
Once I made my way through the gardens I came to an exit gate, turning left for the waterfall. It’s a quick walk down to the falls although if going too fast you may miss it. You’ll see some stairs on the right side of the road leading to some buildings and a path down to the right going back toward the ropeway. Follow this path to get to the falls.
The turn off from this path is pretty quick, but at least there is a sign.
Finally I made it to Nunobiki Falls! Such a beautiful waterfall. Definitely worth a short trip to Kobe. Follow the path next to the waterfall down and it drops you off at Shin-Kobe Station, super easy. Pro tip: this can be done in flip flops.
