Blog Maldives Male Atoll
The Maldives are a country I’ve been dreaming of going to since my senior year of high school when I found out about them. I’m so stoked to say I finally made it there, and that it definitely won’t be my last trip. Here’s my 48hr adventure in the Maldives Male Atoll.
Flying into Male is incredible, you have a birds eye view of all the atolls. If it wasn’t sunset you would be able to see the colorations in the water. Male itself, don’t bother with this Island. It’s quite crazy with lots of motorcycles and whatnot getting around, lots of packed in city. Since I didn’t have much time here as I was making the best of a stopover, I decided to stay close to the airport island, on Villimale. If you’re looking to get to Villimale from the airport you take the ferry (running every 10min) to Male, a taxi to the Villimale ferry port (where you’ll see all the craziness), then a ferry to Villimale (a much nicer, calmer island).
To still get the most of out my stay I decided to book a day tour to see some other islands and dive sites. I booked through Secret Paradise, and highly recommend them! They gave me a private tour, all in all we stopped at four snorkel points, had a great lunch on a local island, and while I was supposed to go surfing, because it was windy they found me a kite so I went kiteboarding!! I saw live coral, turtles, sharks, and stingrays! My guide Kokko was the best!
All in all it was a fantastic day, and only appropriate that it was my birthday present to myself! I ended the day with dinner next to the water watching the sunsets reflection.
The next day I snorkeled at the watersports beach outside of where I was staying on Villimale. Not as great as what I had seen the day before, but still much better than what you would see in Florida. After some snorkeling I went and walked around the island a bit and watched some waves break and barrel, I could do that for hours.
After getting a little hot from all the wave watching I went back and changed to go for a swim in that beautiful water. I wanted to surf but considering it was going right into the rocks and there was a strong rip current I wasn’t really feeling it. Alas, my 48 hours in the Maldives Male Atoll were up. So I headed to the airport.
Tips:
Don’t try to catch a taxi during prayer time.
Lock your suitcase, they turned mine inside out looking for $
